Acne Combination Skin Treatment

Finding an acne combination skin treatment that works can be difficult. Combination skin is tricky to deal with on its own… but add acne skin issues on top of that and it can be near impossible!

Trust me, I know your pain. I myself have combination skin that is also acne prone and it took me YEARS to find the perfect acne combination skin treatment that actually cleared my zits without drying out the rest of my skin.

It’s not easy. Combination skin means that your cheeks are normal/dry but your T zone area (the center of your face) is oily. So you have to find the perfect balance of products that control the oil but aren’t over-drying for your cheeks.

I literally have tried hundreds of different products in my quest to find the perfect combination skin acne treatments.

So what have I discovered?

*The key is in finding the right balance of products for your skin type.*

A lot of acne products I tried just totally dried out my skin, which often made my acne worse!

If you use over-drying products, you’re skin will actually react by producing more oil, which is the exact opposite of what you want.

My tips based on what has worked for me:

  1. Use a mild cleanser that removes oil but isn’t overly drying.

You can stick with just one cleanser for both morning and evening, or you can use a more gentle, hydrating cleanser in the morning and a slightly stronger cleanser in the evening to remove any oil-buildup or makeup you wear during the day. Personally I use:
  2. Apply an acne treatment to your problem areas only.

I use a benzoyl peroxide product on my T zone but not on my cheeks. And if I feel that my skin is particularly dry on a certain day, then I skip this step entirely. The over the counter benzoyl peroxide product that is consistently rated #1 by consumers an skincare experts is Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment, Vanishing Formula.

  3. Apply a lightweight moisturizer that is oil free.

This provides your dry skin with some extra moisture without adding an overly oily product to your T zone. I like Bioelements Beyond Hydration Gel.
  4. Finish with sunscreen!

Sunscreen is really essential for protecting your skin, even in the winter. I have fair skin so I especially need to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. But a lot of sunscreens can make your breakouts worse! Finding a sunscreen for acne prone skin can be a challenge, but the ones I’ve found to work without making me breakout are:

Of course everyone’s skin is different and you will likely have to experiment with several different products before you find the right combination that works for you.

I just wanted to share my experience and what has worked for me because I know how frustrating it can be searching for an effective acne combination skin treatment.

I hope these tips have helped, but if acne skin problems are a serious concern for you then definitely consult with a dermatologist or skin care specialist to discuss further treatment options.
