Alkaline Foods vs. Acidic Foods
How to Achieve the Correct Acid/Alkaline Balance
Eating alkaline foods can improve your complexion, reduce breakouts, and increase your overall health.
In order to be at optimum health, our bodies need to be slightly alkaline - our blood pH should stay around 7.365. And our bodies are constantly trying to maintain that pH balance through any means necessary.
Most people's bodies are overly acidic. This is primarily due to a diet that includes too many animal products such as meat, cow's milk dairy, white flour, sugar, artificial sweeteners, coffee, and soda.
See all foods are either acid-forming or alkaline-forming. All the foods listed above are acid-forming. So a diet predominantly containing those foods will leave us imbalanced by being too acidic. Many modern diseases, including acne, have been linked to having an acidic blood pH.
Over-acidity in the blood can lead to an over-growth of micro-organisms and bacteria in the intestines. These micro-organisms prevent your digestive system from working efficiently. As a result, nutrients aren't absorbed properly and toxins can be pushed out of the skin through breakouts.
So how can we prevent and/or remedy this situation? It's easy - by simply adding more alkaline foods to our diets. Generally it is said that at least 80% of your diet should be made up of alkaline-forming foods.
So just what are alkaline foods?
Here are some of the best alkaline-forming foods:
- Leafy green vegetables
- Fresh fruits
- Certain grains such as millet, wild rice, and brown rice
- Raw plant fats such as avocados, olives, and nuts (except for peanuts)
Also, eating enzyme-rich foods that help our bodies digest can help restore our bodies to a more alkaline state as well. An excellent source of enzymes are sprouted foods, such as:
- chick peas
- sunflower seeds
- pumpkin seeds
- and mung beans
Additionally, drinking plenty of water with a splash of fresh lemon juice throughout the day can also help to re-balance your pH.
